Nothing was broken.
Zorian was a teenager when his parents sent him to a psychologist. The idea was to talk him out of the things he kept saying he could see. The old man listened for a while, then reached for a deck of cards. He had been waiting years for someone like Zorian to walk in.
Who is Zorian
A Polish boy who saw more than he was supposed to, in a school that laughed at him.
He was drawn to angels before he had any words for it. The names, the orders, the sense of being spoken to when a room went quiet. At school it made him the strange one. He learned early that the safest thing to do with a gift is hide it.
The psychologist changed that. Instead of curing him, he taught him: how to read the cards properly, how to separate his own noise from what was actually being said, how to hold someone's story without drowning in it. That apprenticeship lasted years.
Zorian left Poland for England as a young man and has been reading ever since. Quietly, mostly by word of mouth, for people who arrive at his door the same way he once arrived at that office. Certain something is there. Half expecting to be laughed at.
